DESCRIBE THE PERFORMANCE PROBLEM

Before proceeding, take a few minutes to describe the performance problem as specifically as possible. Take a sheet of paper and list the observable behaviors the person is or is not engaging in that leads you to believe you have a performance problem.

Avoid the tendency to generalize. For instance, it is much better to describe the problem as "Karl has missed the last three status reporting deadlines," than "Karl is lazy" or "Karl has a bad attitude."

As you describe the problem ask and answer the following questions:

What is the difference between what is occurring and what should be occurring?

What specific behaviors are occurring that should be changed?

What is the person doing that he/she shouldn't be doing?

What isn't the person doing that he/she should be doing?
