MODEL SYNOPSIS
This model can help anticipate
the possible reactions of existing group members to new members.
The model identifies four specific reactions that depend on the
position to be filled and the group's receptivity to the newcomer.
Position Placement refers to the position to be filled. Central
positions have more power than peripheral positions. Group receptivity
is the reaction of existing members to the new member. Often
receptivity has to do with how the group feels about the group
from which the new member was most recently a part.
Confrontation
The most actively detrimental reaction is confrontation. This
occurs when a new member assumes a powerful role in the group
but is opposed by the existing members. The situation often occurs
when existing members are not involved in selecting the group
replacement.
Nurturance
When existing group members welcome a new member in a powerful
role the reaction is characterized by support and cooperation.
Existing members work with the new member to bring him/her up
to speed so the group can quickly resume productive effort.
Avoidance
This quadrant represents a closed group's reaction to a peripheral
position occupied by a newcomer. The newcomer feels isolated
and unwelcome, though the impact is not as severe since the role
held is less critical to the group's effort.
Acceptance
This reaction occurs when peripheral, non-critical, positions
are filled by individuals who are accepted by the group. Relations
are friendly, but the newcomer may play a limited role in the
group's decisions.
