To determine the appropriate leadership style to use with an individual on a given project or task, first consider his/her level of competence. Keep in mind that an individual's level of competence can be different for different tasks or projects. Consider the following competency questions:
What amount of knowledge and skills does the individual have to apply to the task?
What previous experience does the person have on this or similar projects or tasks?
How would you assess this individual's problem solving and analytical skills?
How capable is the person at meeting deadlines and working under pressure?
